You can get support if you are living with obesity. The type of support depends on the area you live in.

HSE weight management support programme

This programme supports you to manage your weight and health. It can be an important part of your treatment.

It is a free 12 month programme, run by registered dietitians.

What support you get

The programme has lots of up-to-date information about treating and living with obesity.

It covers topics such as:

  • how your body regulates weight and the many things that can affect it
  • treatment options for obesity
  • ways you can support your health and weight long-term
  • healthy eating
  • physical activity
  • sleeping well
  • managing stress
  • tools that can help you prepare, plan and keep up positive changes for your health

The programme will help you build the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to adopt healthier long-term habits.

How the programme is run

This is a free programme, run by HSE dietitians.

The programme runs either online or in-person. It runs weekly over the first few months, followed by ongoing sessions over the rest of the year.

You are welcome to bring a family member, carer or friend for support.

It is a group programme, so you will have the opportunity to meet other people living with obesity. Friendly dietitians will create a safe place where you can share experiences and learn from each other in a relaxed environment.

You will get a free guide book with information, practical tools and tips. These will support you during the programme and into the future.

How to sign up for the programme

Your GP can refer you to the programme if you have obesity. Ask your GP about the programme, and let them know you are interested to sign up.

Once your GP has referred you, the team in your local health centre will book you into the next available programme.

The programme is running in many centres around the country. If it is not available yet in your area, the health centre team will let your GP know.

It may become available in your area in the future. Your GP will be told when this is the case.

What participants say about the programme

“The dietitians were very easy to talk to, very approachable. They didn’t tell you what to do, they helped you focus on getting healthier.”

“I feel that I am now well on the way to a new and hopefully permanent way of life which will be beneficial to my overall health.”
