Cervical screening frequency

How often you need cervical screening depends on your age, your results and your health.

If you are age:

  • 25 to 29, your cervical screening is every 3 years - because you are more likely to have HPV
  • 30 to 65, your cervical screening is every 5 years

You may need to go for cervical screening more often, such as every year if you:

  • have HPV that does not go away (persistent HPV)
  • had a colposcopy
  • had treatment for abnormal cells

You need cervical screening:

  • soon after kidney failure and every year if you are on dialysis for kidney failure
  • in the year before and every year after certain organ transplants - kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas or small bowel transplant
  • within a year of a HIV diagnosis and every year after
