The risks of being inactive

Being inactive means having long periods of inactivity, with little to no movement. This is also called sedentary behaviour.

Small changes can make a big difference.

Sedentary behaviour can include:

  • sitting
  • lying down
  • watching TV
  • working at a desk

Resting is normal. But too much inactivity can lead to health problems, such as:

  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • obesity

It can also weaken your muscles and reduce flexibility.

Inactivity can also lead to increased stress, anxiety and depression.

Think of times you are inactive during your day. Try to find opportunities to move more. Stand up often while watching TV, stretch at your desk, or take a short walk after your lunch.

Every move counts!
