Setting goals for exercise is a great way to stay motivated and track your progress.
People who set goals are more active, and they stay active for longer.
Make your goals SMART.
SMART stands for:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Relevant
- Time-bound
Specific means your goal should be clear and focused. Instead of saying ‘I want to be more active’, say ‘I want to become more active by walking more.'
Measurable means you can track your progress by including days or times, such as ‘I want to walk for 30 minutes, 3 days a week’.
Achievable means your goal is realistic and is something you can do. For example if you are currently not active, it might be more achievable to say ‘I want to walk for 10 minutes, 3 days a week’ at the start.
Relevant means your goal should suit you and what you like doing. For example, don't set a goal to swim 3 days a week if you do not like swimming and would prefer to go for walks.
Time-bound means setting a deadline, such as for the next month.
By being SMART you can create goals that are effective in helping you become more active.
Remember - every move counts!
