Anaesthetic

If you are having surgery or tests, you may require anaesthesia. This is to reduce or prevent pain, numb sensation in certain areas of the body and can induce sleep. The department of anaesthetics provides anaesthetic care for a wide range of surgical patients. There are two common types: Local anaesthetic: a small area of the body is numbed and you remain fully conscious, often used during minor procedures. General anaesthetic: you're totally unconscious and unaware of the procedure, this is often used for more serious operations.

Intensive care anaesthesia

Intensive care medicine (ICM) also referred to as critical care medicine, is that body of specialist knowledge and practice concerned with the treatment of patients, with, at risk of, or recovering from potentially life threatening failure of one or more of the body organ systems. It includes the provision of organ system support, the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute illness, systems management and patient safety, ethics, end-of-life care and support of families.
