Urgent and emergency care report (monthly)

We publish a monthly report that shows:

  • the number of patients who were on trolleys or other inappropriate beds at 8am each day
  • if hospitals operated within their threshold

The report uses figures we publish in our daily urgent and emergency care report.

How to read the report

The figures show the number of people who were on trolleys at 8am each day in emergency departments (ED) and hospital wards by:

  • hospital
  • region
  • national total

Hospital staff had decided to admit these patients to hospital. But the patients were waiting for a transfer to an inpatient bed. The figures do not include patients who were waiting to be seen or triaged in the ED.

Trolley means any bed that is put in an area that is not appropriate. This includes any beds put in corridors or areas where there is not usually a bed.

Green, orange and red

Each hospital has a threshold. This is based on the size of the hospital and number of beds.

The report uses a colour code to show if hospitals operated within their threshold.

Green means the number of people on trolleys was within the hospital's threshold.

Orange means that the number of people on trolleys was just below the hospital's threshold.

Red means that the number of people on trolleys was over the hospital's threshold.

Days in green, orange and red

The table shows how many days each hospital was within or over their threshold in the month.
