About Anaesthetic

If you are having surgery or tests, your doctor will give you medicines called anaesthetics. This is to reduce or prevent pain. They numb sensation in certain areas of the body and can induce sleep. The Department of Anaesthetics provides anaesthetic care for a wide range of surgical patients. There are 2 common types: Local anaesthetic: a small area of the body is numbed and you remain fully conscious, often used during minor procedures General anaesthetic: you're totally unconscious and unaware of the procedure – often used for more serious operations

We may ask you to:

  • attend a virtual clinic
  • wear a face mask/other PPE
  • complete a COVID-19 questionnaire by phone before coming to hospital and to repeat same on arrival
  • to wait in their car until closer to your appointment time
