Speech and Language Paediatric Therapy
Provide impairment and functional interventions to people with Communication and Feeding, Eating, Drinking and Swallowing (FEDS) difficulties. Work with the individual and with their communication partners and wider community to provide supports for communication disability. Risk management of clients with dysphagia - reduce need for hospital admission and improve quality of life. Work collaboratively with other healthcare providers and social support services. Right Care - Clients with Acquired Communication and FEDS now able to access SLT – open referral policy Individualised Treatment: Consultation, Ongoing Tx, Onward Referral Report to client with assessment findings and recommendations in plain English Training with MDT and other services e.g. RIC team, Meals on wheels Gateway for onward referral, e.g. counselling, dietetics, social prescribing - Right Place - Service at local clinic (Bray) Service in the home (ease of access, reduces DNAs) Online and remote sessions (ongoing service provision during COVID, favoured by younger clients, Aim to de-medicalise and run communication groups outside of clinic setting (e.g. coffee shop, library) PD Big and Loud Boot camp (currently only available in SCH) - Person centred and holistic approach to intervention. Palliative supports for end of life care. - Right Time - Timely: High priority clients (palliative, MND, urgent dysphagia), seen within 2 weeks Flexible: Open referral so can discharge and attend at a future date when ‘ready’ for Treatment. Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs) provide assessment, diagnosis & therapy for children (0-18yrs) with a wide range of communication difficulties, residing in North Wicklow catchment area Children with Primary Speech and/or Language Difficulties We see Children with communication difficulties which are secondary to a more significant primary difficulty are referred to a more appropriate service where their ongoing &/or complex needs are better met by multi-disciplinary team. Communication difficulties we work with: Language Delay/Disorder Both comprehension and/or expressive language difficulties Speech Sound Difficulties Dysfluency (e.g.: stammer) Speech and Language difficulties arising from hearing impairment Cleft Palate Voice disorders (Referral to ENT may be advised) Specific Language Impairment Mild General Learning Disability Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder attending mainstream classes in mainstream schools
