Children's disability network teams (CDNTs) have long waiting lists.
Your child will have to wait:
- firstly, for their referral to be reviewed and a decision made on which service meets the needs described
- secondly, they will wait to access services, after their referral is accepted
We understand it is upsetting to have to wait for supports that your child needs.
We are working to improve wait times for services.
How long you will wait for services
The length of time your child will wait for services depends on:
- the demand for CDNT services in your area
- staffing levels at your local CDNT
- the type of support your child needs
Waiting for a long period
Contact your CDNT if you have been waiting for some time. They will confirm that your referral is in place.
They may be able to give a broad estimate of when your child will be seen.
They can advise you on what supports you can access while you are on the waiting list.
Contact the service if:
- your contact details change
- there is a change in your child’s situation which concerns you
Supports you can access while you are waiting
You may be able to access some supports and resources while you are on a waiting list.
These may include parent group intervention. These are therapeutic sessions with other parents to help you support your child.
A CDNT may also offer advice clinics from social work, speech and language therapy or other areas.
If you are on a waiting list for a CDNT, ask them about the support they offer while you are waiting.
Online resources and supports
CDNTs provide online guidance and resources that may be useful.
These include guides related to:
- communication development
- life skills and independence
- play
- sensory processing
Online resources include:
- tips and strategies - cho7cndt.ie
- resource hub - enableireland.ie
- children and Young Persons Family Resources - smh.ie
Support groups and national organisations
Many national organisations provide support groups and information. These are for families, carers and children with conditions associated with disability.
See a list of organisations chosen by health professionals and families.
Private therapy
You might choose to take your child to a private therapist for support while you wait. Make sure the therapist is registered with CORU.
You can find registered private therapists through:
- The Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists
- The Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland
- Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists
Your child will not lose their place on the waiting list if they see a private therapist. But you should tell your CDNT or care team once they see them. This is so they can work together to develop shared goals to support your child and family.
