Taking mirtazapine with other medicines

Some medicines stop mirtazapine from working properly.

Check with a GP, pharmacist or nurse if you:

  • are on any other medicines or supplements
  • have recently taken other medicines
  • might soon take any other medicines

MAO inhibitors and mirtazapine

Do not take mirtazapine with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors). MAO inhibitors are a type of antidepressant. Examples include moclobemide, tranylcypromine and selegiline.

If you stop taking mirtazapine or MAO inhibitors, do not take the other medicine during the next 2 weeks either.

Taking mirtazapine with herbal remedies

Do not take the herbal remedy St John's wort while you're being treated with mirtazapine, as this will increase your risk of side effects.

Recreational drugs

Taking cannabis with mirtazapine can make you feel very sleepy, especially if you've just started taking mirtazapine.

It can be dangerous to take mirtazapine with:

  • methadone
  • stimulants such as MDMA (ecstasy) or cocaine
  • hallucinogens such as LSD
  • novel psychoactive substances (which used to be known as legal highs) like mephedrone
