There are 2 types of abortion methods:
- medical abortion (the 'abortion pill') - taking medicine to end the pregnancy
- surgical abortion - a procedure to remove the pregnancy
You can have an abortion up to 12 weeks into your pregnancy.
In exceptional circumstances, an abortion can take place after 12 weeks if there:
- is a risk to your life
- are problems with the development of the fetus
You may have a choice between a surgical or medical abortion, but this is not always possible.
If you are under 9 weeks pregnant, your GP or doctor will advise you to have a medical abortion.
