Biography

Dr Liam Casserly qualified in 1991 from National University of Ireland Galway (formerly UCG). He trained in Nephrology and Medicine in Boston where he became board certified in nephrology, hypertension and general medicine.

He worked as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University Medical Centre before returning to Ireland to take up his current post as Consultant Nephrologist at University Hospital Limerick and General Physician at St John’s Hospital in 2004.

He has focused his role as Lead Clinical Nephrologist in developing medical and dialysis services at University Hospital Limerick. In conjunction with Dr Cronin, they have developed and expanded the renal service to include a satellite dialysis unit, developed a kidney biopsy and plasma exchange service at University Hospital Limerick, developed home therapy services including peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis. The parent dialysis unit at University Hospital Limerick was expanded to a 24 station unit in 2016.

Dr. Casserly has served as secretary of the Irish Nephrology Society and chair of the Medical Education Liaison Group at University Hospital Limerick. He is a director of the Mid Western Hospital Development Trust. As chair of a working group in 2007, he developed guidelines for management of chronic kidney disease in Ireland.
