Biography
Dr Hugh O’Callaghan graduated from Trinity College Dublin Medical School in 2003. Following his internship in UHL, he commenced postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine.
Dr O’Callaghan is a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, serving in the rank of Commandant. He is the Commanding Officer of 2 Brigade Medical Detachment Reserve and is based in St. Bricin’s Hospital, Dublin. He served as a Medical Officer and peacekeeper on deployment with the 93rd Infantry Battalion in Liberia, West Africa in 2005 following the civil war there. He subsequently served as Senior Medical Officer with the 99th Infantry Battalion in Darfur/Chad in 2009.
Following his return to Ireland, Dr O’Callaghan commenced the Anaesthesiology training scheme. He returned to his hometown to finish his last year on the specialty training scheme in UHL in July 2019 and worked in the Intensive Care Unit throughout the recent coronavirus pandemic.
