Biography

Professor Deirdre McGrath graduated from University College Cork with a degree in Medicine in 1991. She subsequently completed her Specialist Clinical Training in the UK and was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine degree by the University of London in 2002 on the Genetic Predisposition to Granulomatous Lung Diseases.

While in the UK she worked as a researcher in renowned centres such as the National Heart and Lung Institute of the Royal Brompton Hospital and the Clinical Genomic Unit of the Imperial College of Science Technology & Medicine. She also worked as a substantive Consultant in General & Respiratory Medicine and Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at St Georges University & NHS Trust, London.

Prof McGrath has been working with the Lung Cancer Service at University Hospital Limerick since 2017 and was recently appointed as Head of the Graduate Entry Medical School at the University of Limerick.

Her research interests include aspects of lung immunity and inflammation and the clinical application of medical devices. She is one of the Founding Principal Investigators of 4i, the Graduate Entry Medical School's Centre for Interventions in Infection, Inflammation and Immunity and is Medical Adviser to the University of Limerick’s Optical Fibres Sensors Research Centre. Her medical education research interests include assessment, professionalism and quality assurance.

Prof McGrath has been awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. She was awarded the Hospital Professionals' Excellence in Respiratory Innovation Award 2018 and also led the Medical School team that won the National Forum's Disciplinary Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment Award 2018.
