Biography
Prof Chwanrow Baban started his surgical training in Ireland in 2006 on Basic Surgical Training (BST) in Cork and achieved the membership exam MRCS.
His PhD Theses was “Exploring the relationship between bacteria and tumors” and his interest was always in breast cancer. He invented a new animal model for Ovarian cancer and set up the first Biobank for all cancer samples In Bioscience Institute at UCC.
He was awarded Doctor of the Year in 2013, received the Gold Medal, and worked as surgical clinical tutor in UCC (University College Cork) teaching 4th and 5th (Final) year medical students.
He carried out his higher surgical training, Specialist Training in Ireland and his first year was at University Hospital Limerick.
He did his fellowship exam and was awarded FRCS (Fellow of Royal College of Surgeon) and moved to Frimley Park NHS Foundation Trust/UK in his final year to do a Fellowship on Oncoplastic Breast Surgery.
He is on the collaborative group for Midwestern region within NCCP and involved extensively in the new Family history Breast cancer pathway in Ireland.
Further to his undergraduate teaching, Prof Baban is actively involved with surgical postgraduates training and membership exams. He has designed and led clinical trials, including randomised controlled trials and currently a Principal Investigator for PhD students in UL.
He enjoys running and has completed half and full marathons. He enjoys spending times with family especially his two boys.
Prof Baban is currently Senior Lecturer in Surgery at University of Limerick, Module Lead for Surgery in UL and a Consultant General/Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at HSE Mid West.
