Biography
Dr. Nuala O’Connell qualified in medicine from the National University of Ireland Galway in 1994 after completing an intercalated BSc. degree in biochemistry. After spending a year working in Australia, she undertook a Masters in Microbiology at QMW, University of London 1997. She subsequently trained in clinical microbiology in RCSI/Beaumont Dublin and the PHLS West Midlands Scheme UK. She was awarded her MD thesis from the University of Warwick in 2003. Nuala has worked at University of Limerick Hospital Group since 2005, becoming an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick in 2016. A keen researcher, she works collaboratively as a principal investigator with Professor Colum Dunne at the Centre for Interventions in Infection, Inflammation and Immunity, GEMS, UL. She and other colleagues also won the ULHG award for quality improvement in 2017 for their diploma work on Carbapenemase Producing Enterobacteriales (CPE).
