Biography

Dr. Sarah O’Connell specialises in infectious diseases and is a General Internal Medicine Consultant. Dr. Sarah O’Connell obtained her medical degree from University College Cork in 2007 and completed Higher Specialist Training in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2015. In 2018 she was awarded MD in Clinical Medicine in the area of Blood Borne Virus Screening and Disease Epidemiology with Trinity College Dublin. In 2017, following completion of a Research Fellowship at St James’s Hospital, Dublin, Dr O’Connell took up post at University Hospital Limerick. Dr O’Connell has undertaken partnered research involving a broad range of stakeholders. She has published in the areas of novel blood borne virus screening strategies, HIV disease epidemiology and general infectious disease topics including babesiosis and tick-borne diseases. She is currently Honorary Secretary for University Hospital Limerick Medical Board, is member of the Infectious Disease Society of Ireland and Society for Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Ireland. She is the Out-Patient Anti-Microbial Therapy (OPAT) Clinical Lead for the Mid-West. She holds the title of Adjunct Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Limerick Graduate-Entry Medical School. Dr O’Connell was awarded MRCPI in 2009 and FRCPI
