Biography

Dr. Peter Boers studied Medicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW, Sydney, Australia). He completed a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSc) in 1990, followed by Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS, Honours Class 1) in 1991. He undertook specialist physician training under the supervision of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and completed advanced training in Neurology in 1999. He completed a three year research degree, and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Dr. Boers worked as a junior doctor at the Prince Henry and Prince of Wales Hospitals, Sydney, as well as several other affiliated hospitals in Sydney and regional New South Wales. He completed a one year fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney. In 2001/2002 he was the Australasian Fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, working and studying in diverse Neurology subspecialty firms. After completing his Neurology training, Dr. Boers was appointed as a Staff Specialist (Consultant) in Neurology at St. George Hospital (one of the largest teaching hospitals in Sydney) in 2001. During his time at St. George Hospital, he was also the Director of the Acute Stroke Unit. In January 2008, Dr. Boers became the first full-time Consultant Neurologist at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Limerick (now University Hospital Limerick). Dr. Boers was President of the Irish Neurological Association in 2015, culminating in the first ever meeting of the Association in Limerick, in May 2016. He has served on the Board of the Irish Institute of Clinical Neuroscience as Secretary and Treasurer, and is currently Dean of the IICN.
