Use this page to see:
- how many outpatient, inpatient, day case and endoscopy patients were seen in each hospital over a 12 month period
- how each hospital is performing against waiting time targets
Hospital activity updates
We publish hospital activity reports every month.
They show the total number of patients seen under 4 types of care:
- outpatient
- day case
- inpatient
- emergency
The data covers a 12-month period. It is usually reported 4 months in arrears. This is to allow time to check and validate the data.
Hospital waiting times performance
Hospitals try to see patients within a time-frame agreed in the National Service Plan (PDF, 3.15MB, 148 pages).
For example, 1 target is that 90% of people waiting for inpatient care should be seen within 9 months.
We publish data showing waiting times performance for:
How to read the waiting times performance report
The report breaks down the data by:
- hospital group
- hospital model number
What is a hospital model number
Hospitals are grouped under 4 hospital models, named by model number. Their model number is based on the services they offer, their location, size and facilities.
Data columns
The data is reported under the columns:
- NSP MWT
- YTD discharges (inpatient, day case or GI scope)
- YTD OPD attendances new (outpatient)
- Total patients waiting
NSP MWT
This means National Service Plan maximum waiting times.
The current National Service Plan target is that by year-end:
- 90% of people are waiting less than 15 months for an outpatient appointment
- 90% of people are waiting less than 9 months for inpatient and day case treatment
- 95% of people are waiting less than 9 months for an endoscopy
This is the maximum waiting time (MWT).
The figure in this data shows:
- the percentage of people that the hospital has seen within that target timeframe
- the year-to-change change
YTD discharges
YTD stands for year-to-date. This data only applies to inpatient, day case or GI scope waiting times performance reports.
The data shows the number of discharges for the year to date. We also show 2019 data for comparison.
The change is the percentage increase or decrease in discharges.
YTD OPD attendances new
YTD stands for year-to-date. This data only applies to the outpatient waiting times performance report.
The data shows the number of new attendances to the outpatient department (OPD) for the year to date. We also show 2019 data for comparison.
The change is the percentage increase or decrease in outpatient attendances.
Total patients waiting
This is the total number of patients on the waiting list. We also show the percentage change for the year to date.
