How and when to take statins

Always take statins as your GP or pharmacist has told you. Check with your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.

When to take your statin

Usually, statins are taken once a day.

For some types of statin it does not matter what time of day you take it, as long as you stick to the same time.

Some types of statin should be taken in the evening.

Check with your GP whether there's a particular time of day you should take your statin.

You can usually take statins with or without food. Swallow them whole with water.

How long it takes for statins to work

Your cholesterol levels should drop within 4 weeks, if you take your statin regularly.

Although the statin is working, you may not feel any different. Most people with high cholesterol do not have any symptoms.

Statins are safe to take for a long time, even many years. They work best when you take them for a long time.

If you forget to take a dose

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose as normal.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you often forget doses, it may help to set a reminder alarm.
