Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. The immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin.
Insulin keeps blood glucose in the correct range.
The only treatment for type 1 diabetes is insulin.
You may need daily injections of insulin to manage your blood glucose levels. Or you may use an insulin pump.
It can take time to learn to manage type 1 diabetes, but you can still do all the things you enjoy.
Type 1 diabetes can be diagnosed at any age. About one third of people diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are over 30.
