Dietitian support for children with a disability

Children and young people with a disability may experience problems with diet and nutrition. For example, some conditions may mean your child is more likely to be underweight or overweight.

Dietitians need to work closely with the family and other members of the children's disability team. This is essential for effective management of nutritional problems in children with disabilities.

What a dietitian does

A dietitian, may help your child to improve nutrition, diet and weight.

By seeing a dietitian, children and young people with a disability can:

  • improve the amount of food and drink they consume

  • improve their mobility
  • lower their chance of spending time in hospital
  • improve their digestion and bowel patterns
