Deciding whether to have pregnancy screening tests

Screening tests can help you make informed choices about whether you want to continue with the pregnancy and your care during pregnancy, or after your baby is born. They can reduce the risk of you becoming seriously ill during your pregnancy.

You can choose not to have screening tests.

Deciding whether or not to have screening tests done can be difficult. It's a personal choice that you and your partner or support person must make.

Make an informed choice

Never be afraid to ask questions. Ask your midwife, obstetrician or GP about your screening test options, and discuss these with your partner or family and friends.

Examples of questions to ask:

  • What is this test for?
  • What does it mean if the test is positive?
  • What could happen if I don’t have the test done?
