Margaret from Cork quit after smoking cigarettes for 35 years. Here’s her story...
I began smoking at 15 years of age. I was smoking 15 to 20 cigarettes a day, and probably closer to 20 would be the realistic side of it.
I have Multiple Sclerosis and the physiotherapist recommended a fitness programme to help with my condition. And that’s how it started. The fitness programme instructor asked 'Do you smoke?' and yes was the answer - as always.
After a while she approached me again to know would I be interested in quitting smoking. The next thing I knew I was sitting in a stop smoking support group.
I found the group sessions fantastic. There were eight people in the group that I attended and each and every one of them was an inspiration.
Every one of us had different reasons for quitting and were from different walks of life yet we were all there for the one purpose - to quit smoking.
I use the Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) patches for 12 weeks and the NRT inhaler for something to do with my hands. The patches definitely work behind the scenes.
I’m so proud of myself for getting this far. It’s a big achievement. I haven’t many big achievements in my life but this is one of them. I have more energy, get up and go and more drive. I feel cleaner and energised. I even feel more comfortable speaking to other people.
I would recommend the Quit programme 100%. I would recommend to anyone thinking about quitting - don’t do it on your own, get in contact with the Quit Team - you won’t regret it!"
