Why you should sleep on your side during pregnancy

As your bump gets bigger, it can be difficult to get good sleep.

Sleeping on your side

Sleeping on your side is often more comfortable than sleeping on your back.

You can:

  • sleep on whichever side feels most comfortable
  • keep your knees and legs bent
  • try placing a pillow between your legs
  • put a pillow under your tummy to support your bump

Sleeping on your side during your third trimester will also reduce your risk of stillbirth. You can sleep on either side. This includes both sleeping at night and naps.

It's important to fall asleep on your side. But don’t worry if you wake up on your back. If it's during the night, turn onto your side and go back to sleep.

Trouble getting to sleep

If you're having trouble getting to sleep:

  • avoid drinks with caffeine in them such as tea or coffee
  • practice some relaxation exercises - these can also help you during labour
