New Health A-Z

We're working on a new Health A to Z to provide easy-to-understand information about conditions, symptoms and treatment.

Published: 19 February 2020

We have unpublished the old Health A to Z while we prepare a new collection of health guides to replace it. We will publish new content in batches starting with the most viewed topics on the old site.

How Health A to Z content is produced and maintained

Our new content will continue to use NHS Health A to Z content as a base, generously provided to us by the NHS.

This content will then be prepared for our site to ensure it is accessible by as wide an audience as possible. Then, it is fact-checked and localised by a network of subject matter experts working in Ireland.

These experts are sourced from the:

  • HSE’s National Clinical Programmes
  • HSE National Medication Safety Programme (SaferMeds)
  • Irish College of General Practitioners
  • Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland
  • Health Products Regulatory Authority

Once the content is published, it is entered into our governance process to ensure it is reviewed periodically and as needed. A content governance board, charter, review process and escalation process are in place to support the governance of our online health guides.

This project is a collaboration between the HSE’s Digital team in the Communications Division, working in partnership with the Office of the Chief Clinical Officer, with funding from the Slaintecare Integration Fund.

Value of the Health A to Z

We know the new Health A to Z will be a valuable resource for people in Ireland and meet a number of the HSE’s objectives.

In the 12 months before it was unpublished, pages on the old Health A to Z were viewed over 4 million times reaching a large audience of people seeking health information.

Research conducted by the Digital team in 2019 highlighted that 6 of the top 20 tasks users of our website are trying to complete involve having access to information about symptoms, conditions and treatment.

These guides will also support:

  • Objectives from The National Patient Experience Survey around providing information for patients before, during and after hospital care
  • Sláintecare’s objectives to empower citizens to be more informed about their health

Your Health A-Z

The Health A-Z is intended to act as a public health information resource for everyone living in Ireland and for the health professionals who care for them. It does not represent every medical condition or treatment.

We are happy to receive suggestions to include new conditions and any feedback on existing content. You can email with your suggestions or feedback. We will share your emails with our content governance board for discussion.

The Health A-Z is intended as a public information resource, provided to enable people to make better use of consultations with health professionals. It will also enable health professionals to engage in more shared decision making with their patients.

We work to ensure the information is up-to-date and evidence-based. However, the fast-moving nature of both health conditions and their available treatments means that the content provided on our site should never replace the advice or assessment of a qualified healthcare professional.
