The real Irish spirit – fun filled alternatives for St Patrick's Day

Buck the trend and celebrate St. Patrick's Day without the hangover.

Published: 10 December 2019

This year, why not buck the trend and celebrate our legendary culture and spirit without the hangover?

Food, family and friends

There’s nothing better than bonding with friends and family over some good food. It’s good for the soul – and your liver!

Invite your friends and neighbours over for a Great Irish Fry-Up or a feed of traditional favourites:

  • Bacon & cabbage
  • Irish stew
  • Dublin coddle
  • Tayto sangers and tea!

Get the kids cooking - some Irish favourites or St Patrick's Day treats

Maybe it’s the craic agus ceol that stirs the Irish spirit more than anything, and it’s fun for everyone – from babies to great grannies. St Patrick’s Day is a great time to hear some buzzing bands and traditional music. Get jiggy at a live music event, join in with a family traditional music session or grab a bodhrán and have a singalong at home. Or have the craic at a céilí – perhaps the most fun you can have on 2 feet!

Find a céilí at your local GAA club or community centre

Why not drink in some natural beauty?

Rain or shine, getting out is one of the best natural highs going – without that morning-after feeling!

Challenge yourself to a hill walk, hit the beach, explore the woods, or just enjoy a kickabout or a stroll in your local park.

Why not check out one of Ireland’s Greenways – on foot or by bicycle?

Get the green theme going and have fun! It’s a great way to mark the day and make good memories – for big kids or little kids.

Have a green-themed party or craft session – check online for St Patrick’s Day themed decorations, food or activities.

Invest in some hair dye, accessories and make-up and go wild.  Get everyone involved  - not just the kids!

Family first

Treat your kids to some fun they’ll remember forever. As well as the parades, check out kid-friendly local events, funfairs, arts and crafts, music and outdoor activities or invent your own.
