High blood pressure after giving birth - High blood pressure in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia

If you had high blood pressure during pregnancy, it may persist for several weeks afterwards. Occasionally it may persist permanently.

You will need to have follow-up check-ups with your doctors. Sometimes you will need to take medication for several weeks.

In most cases, your GP will gradually reduce the dosage over six weeks.

Breastfeeding and blood pressure medication

Breastfeeding is usually the healthiest choice for your baby, even if you are taking medication. Discuss your plans to breastfeed with your obstetrician before the birth. Some blood pressure medications are safer to take than others when breastfeeding.
